Cleft Palate - Obturator
Defects in the maxilla or upper jaw are created by congenital malformations, surgical treatment of benign or malignant tumors or by trauma. An obturator is a prosthetic device used to close a defect in the palate that leads to the nasal cavity. It is used to cover the defect and restore chewing function, improve speech and swallowing. Often the obturator will satisfy cosmetic demands for the affected patient. It provides the wearer with an acrylic removable roof of the mouth.
