Frequently Asked Questions

Questions you should ask your doctor before opting for dental restorations:

  • What is a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists are dental specialists in the restoration and replacement of teeth. The prosthodontist is generally the architect in the development and execution of the dental treatment plan. They are trained to lead a team involving many dental professionals including general dentists, oral surgeons, periodontists, endodontists, orthodontists, and lab technicians.

After completing four years of dental school, prosthodontists receive three years of specialized training in an American Dental Association (ADA) accredited graduate education program. Prosthodontics is one of the eight dental specialties recognized by the ADA.

  • What are your credentials?

Education and experience are essential, but specialists, such as prosthodontists, have completed an advanced graduate residency program approved by the American Dental Association. Drs. Abney and Hill lecture nationally and were on the faculty of Emory University School of Dentistry for twenty years. Drs. Abney and Hill both have a DDS degree and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree.

  • Am I a candidate for dental implants?

As part of your treatment evaluation, Drs. Abney and Hill will carefully review your medical and oral health and examine the condition of your teeth and gums, as well as the amount and quality of your jawbone. Specific x-rays and models will help them determine whether you are a candidate for dental implants. Drs. Abney and Hill have restored more than five-thousand dental implants since 1985.

  • If I am not a candidate for dental implants how can my complete denture be made more comfortable and more stable?

Over time the mouth changes. Those patients with poor ridges or tender gums can now be treated to help these conditions. Following construction of new dentures the final fitting is developed with functional impressions of the patient's jaws. These fittings are developed over a few weeks incorporating the individual chewing and speaking patterns unique to each individual.

  • After my restorative dental treatment is completed can I have my regular dental check ups and cleaning at your office?

Yes, Drs. Abney and Hill have two dental hygienists with many years of experience.
